COLREG trainer · iPhone, iPad and Mac

Learn the Rules of the Road the way you meet them at sea

NavCraft teaches the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG 1972) at night, at an angle, in fog, with seconds to decide. All 41 rules and 4 annexes, every vessel’s lights from any angle, every sound signal, and mock exams that predict your pass chance.

Rules 20–31 · Lights and shapes

Every vessel’s lights, from any angle

Each vessel is drawn from the geometry of the Rules, not from a picture. Walk round her and watch each light switch on and off at its exact arc limit: masthead lights over 225°, sidelights to 22.5° abaft the beam, the sternlight over the last 135°. Switch between night, dusk and day to see her shapes.

  • Power, sail, fishing, towing, NUC, RAM, CBD, pilot and anchored vessels
  • Build it: place a vessel’s lights and shapes yourself
  • Night Watch: five-minute sprints on lights only

All 41 rules · 4 annexes

Each rule as a short lesson you can hear

Every lesson runs the same way: the essence in one sentence, an animated situation, seamanship notes from the bridge, the exact wording examiners test, the official text, and a quick check. The essence of each rule is read aloud in English, Ukrainian or Russian.

  • Animated scenes for crossing, overtaking, head-on and restricted visibility
  • Common myths, each set straight
  • Real collisions that turned on the rule

Rules 32–37 · Annex III

Sound signals at their real length

Hear every manoeuvring, warning and fog signal with real blast lengths: a short blast of about one second, a prolonged one of four to six. The whistle’s pitch follows Annex III, so a big ship sounds like one. Drill them, then sound them yourself on the horn trainer.

  • Rule 34: manoeuvring and warning signals in sight of one another
  • Rule 35: fog signals for every kind of vessel
  • Rule 37 and Annex IV: distress signals

Practice that sticks

Questions that test understanding, not word-spotting

Over 1,100 questions, many of them drawn at night: what is she, who gives way, what do you do now. Reviews are spaced so your memory peaks on your exam date, and certainty-based marking makes the mistakes you were sure about come back first.

  • Situations: who gives way, in sight and in restricted visibility
  • Spaced reviews timed to your exam date
  • Your weak spots, rule by rule

Mock exams

Know your pass chance before the exam does

Mock exams give no feedback until the end, like the real thing: a 20-question quick check, a 50-question paper with a 90% pass mark, and a strict 45-question paper with two errors allowed. NavCraft turns your answers into a predicted pass chance, so you know when you are ready.

On watch between sessions

Ten focused minutes a day

Today plans your watch: new questions from the rules you have learned and the reviews that are due, about ten minutes. Between sessions, a daily nudge, a tip and quick questions you answer right in the notification keep the rules fresh.

Questions

Is NavCraft free?

Yes, to start. Seven lessons, the lights of power-driven and sailing vessels, the manoeuvring signals and the daily watch are free for good, and a 7-day trial opens everything with no charge. After that, keep the full course with a monthly subscription or a one-time purchase.

Which exams does it help with?

Any exam that tests COLREG 1972: deck cadet and officer of the watch (STCW) exams, yachtmaster and skipper certificates, and national licence exams such as the USCG’s. The questions test understanding of the Rules themselves, so they suit any syllabus built on them.

Does it include the official COLREG text?

Yes. Every lesson has the official text of its rule beside the explanation. NavCraft is a study aid, and where they differ the official text prevails.

Does it work offline, at sea?

Yes. Lessons, questions, lights, sound signals and narration are all stored on the device. Only buying, restoring purchases and iCloud sync need a connection.

Which languages does it speak?

The app’s interface is in English. The essence of every rule is written and read aloud in English, Ukrainian and Russian, and you can switch the lesson language at any time.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later, and Mac with macOS 14 or later. One purchase or subscription covers all of them, and progress syncs through iCloud.
